For over 25 years, Hudson Valley resident and educator Dr. Kevin Murphy has worked in public schools as a classroom teacher, disciplinary dean, assistant principal, and principal. In his most recent role as principal at a high school in Highland, NY, Dr. Kevin Murphy created an inclusive, student-centered environment that fostered learning, college and career readiness, and overall student growth.
As an administrator, Dr. Murphy’s multifaceted position required developing and implementing data- and equity-driven decisions that supported student learning. His role also encompassed the implementation of strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing instructional effectiveness, narrowing the achievement gap, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. This student-centered approach also involved advancing social-emotional learning projects that supported holistic student development and a positive school environment. Furthermore, he supported educators in preparing students for annual assessments through developing targeted interventions, academic coaching, and test-taking strategies.
Much of Dr. Murphy’s work involved cultivating an environment where professional growth was supported by educator mentorship, professional learning communities, and instructional coaching. He also encouraged educators to become data literate, so they understood how to use data to improve student achievement. Beyond this, he supported teacher instruction by introducing research-based instructional strategies and learning models for improved student learning.
In addition to his experience as an administrator, Dr. Murphy is a member of the Empire State Supervisors and Administrators Association, the School Administrators Association of New York State, and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. His related educational training includes a master’s degree in school leadership from Hunter College and a doctorate in instructional leadership from the American College of Education, which is in addition to his other degrees, including a Bachelor's and two other Master's degrees.
